New Delhi: Ever since the Motor Vehicles Act enhanced penalties have become effective, people have become extra careful regarding their vehicle documents. Note that renewal of driving licence is not a simple task any longer after the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) issued a new set of guidelines. Note that driving without licence or with expired licence now attracts Rs 5,000 fine.
Currently, the validity of a driving licence is 20 years and those who want to renew it can apply one year before its date of expiry. If the licence is renewed within one year from the date of expiry, then the applicants need to pay a nominal charge fee Rs 200. However, one year after the expiry date, Rs 1,100 will be charged as fine for every year.
Those who are below 30, get validity up to the age of 40 while those in the 30-50 age group get only 10-year validity. Those in the 50-55 age group will have validity only till 60. After 55, the licence will be renewed only for five years.
If your driving license is expired, you can use the government’s SARATHI website to submit a renewal application online. As per the website, an application for renewal shall be entertained not more than one month before the date of expiry of the licence. If the application is late for more than five years after the date of expiry of the licence, the applicant should undergo all the formalities to obtain a fresh licence.
If the application for renewal is made previous to, or not more than 30 days after the date of expiry of the licence, the renewal will be made with effect from the date of its expiry. If the application is made more than 30 days after the date of expiry of the licence, the renewal will be made with effect from the date of receipt of proper application.
